Week 6 (4/27-5/1)- Altered Images/Photography

Back in 2015, the Bronx Documentary Center lead an exhibition called "Altered Images". The exhibition was made of posed and manipulated documentary photos.

Something to keep in mind is what Documentary Photography is. Documentary photographs are accurate representations of the scene that a photographer captures with their camera. By having a photo deemed Documentary, how much should it be manipulated or changed?

Assignment (due Friday, 5/1) :
Choose 4 images that were altered in some way. For each photo, please copy & paste it into your blog. Then tell me how it was altered. Finally, what do you think of the change/alteration that was done? Do you think it impacts the image? Does it matter that it was done?

Below is an Example:

Mission Accomplished.jpg
In this image, the photo was actually staged to create a positive outlook on the war in Iraq. Behind Bush, the sign reads "Mission Accomplished" and the image was presented as a successful end to military operations the United States performed. However the war Bush had deemed a success was far from that and would go on for years, even after Bush finished his presidency.

This sort of manipulation is wrong and depicts a lie. The message being portrayed in the image is not true and was set up by the Bush administration to simply help his image. Ultimately, it was a lie to the public that unfortunately they believed and gave false hope of an end to the conflict.
